This course will introduce students to important authors and topics from English and American literature. Students will also learn about the potential of the Course in English and American Literature and prepare fundamental skills for second year studies and beyond.
Iwata will discuss important themes of English literature in the first half of the semester, and Zettsu will discuss important themes of American literature in the second half of the semester. Lectures will take place in the order outlined in the class syllabus. Every effort will be made to have students interact with the works featured in class including listening to readings of poetry and watching film adaptations. A few quizzes will be given during classes to confirm student understand of class content.

英文学と米文学それぞれの重要作家や課題を紹介しながら、英米文学専修における学びの可能性を明らかにし、2年次以降の学習への基礎を形作る。
This course will introduce students to important authors and topics from English and American literature. Students will also learn about the potential of the Course in English and American Literature and prepare fundamental skills for second year studies and beyond.
学期の前半は岩田が英文学、後半は舌津が米文学の重要な主題について、授業計画に挙げた順序で講義する。できるだけ実際の作品に触れるように努め、詩の朗読テープや代表作の映画化作品なども活用する。理解度を確かめるために、授業内に複数回小テストを実施する。
