【Course Objectives】

Using an anthology of English nation's favourite poems compiled after recited on a popular BBC radio programme running for more than forty years as the course textbook, students will explore what roles literature, especially poetry, performs in our lives. Through that, students will find their own favourite poems among those in the anthology.

【Course Contents】

In each class, students will read 1-2 pieces selected from an anthology of English Nation's favourite poems broadcast on a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme Poetry Please! , excluding those read in Seminar B2. Through attentive reading, they will explore how various phases of our world are expressed in them, say, childhood, maturity, everyday life, discovery, love, nature, state, war, prayer among others, and, at the same time, reflect on their own position—past, present and future—in this world.
Many poems featured in class are not widely known in Japan, so students are expected to read and interpret the words on the page on their own. Multiple students will be assigned to each poem, and each student will prepare handouts and present on their assigned poem. Students not presenting will use this information to engage in active debate regarding the work. Students can expect to present 3-5 times over the course of the semester. The exact number is subject to change depending on the number of participants in the course. Details will be provided in the course syllabus given on the first day of class.
