【Course Objectives】

In this course, students will carry out such various activities as listed below on Othello, the play that students read in the spring term, through which they will examine the play further from multiple angles and deepen their critical understanding of it:
(1) To read critical essays on the play.
(2) To watch performance videos and film versions of the play and have discussions about them.
(3) To form groups so that each group may make a drama-reading presentation based on the group's interpretation of the play.

【Course Contents】

Since theatre is a performing art that is completed only when it is staged, an understanding of a dramatic work cannot be deepened without examining the phases of its performance and reception. In the case of Othello, the theatrical practice of white actor playing Othello in blackface, which has been practised for a long time since the play's premiere, has been called into question in the later periods. In this seminar, students will read critical essays on Othello, view several performances and adaptations of the play, and discuss the modernity of Othello, mainly through group discussions. Finally, each group will give a group presentation expressing their interpretation of the work, including an actual performance of a scene/scenes from Othello.
