At once a paradise and a purgatory, utopia and dystopia, the island holds a unique place within the imagination. In the second semester, this course will explore the imagined geography of the island by navigating through the dark, unsettling experience described in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954).
This course will follow the island fantasy of Lord of the Flies through a variety of media and critical interpretations. Regular weekly readings will be accompanied by film and philosophical debate. Final projects will involve the composition of an academic research paper (800 words) and the delivery of an oral presentation based upon this research.
