Exploring linguistic, historical and cultural backgrounds of various Latin and/or Greek loanwords, students will learn the basics of historical linguistics, etymology and Indo-European comparative linguistics.

英語語彙やその語源や由来についての造詣を深め、語彙力を高めるとともに、それとの関連で英語史や英国史、英語語源学やインド・ヨーロッパ比較言語学についての理解も深める。
Learning linguistic, historical, and cultural backgrounds of various English loanwords chiefly focussing on words borrowed from Latin and Greek.
英語にはラテン語やギリシア語から借用された語が非常に多くありますが、この授業ではそういった借用語を中心に、その語源や由来について学びながら、英語史、英語語源学、印欧語比較言語学などの分野についての造詣を深めます。この作業はボキャブラリービルディングにも役立つので、英語の語彙力を高め、同時に、ヨーロッパの古典語であるラテン語やギリシア語についての知識を深めることももう一つの目的としています。
