As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at consolidating the knowledge and methods of the relevant academic discipline in order to enable students to practice various research activities, including discussion, presentation, and essay composition. Specifically, it focuses on a canonical interwar novel and encourages students to construct an original argument. It is hoped that the seminar further refines students' analytical skills.
On a mid-June day in 1923, Mrs Dalloway goes out to buy some flowers and holds a party for her husband, a Conservative MP Richard Dalloway. This story of a single day has been widely read and studied as a canonical modernist novel. This seminar will closely examine this text, whose remarkable features—including its textuality and its cultural, political, and philosophical thoughts—will doubtless reward the effort of reading it.

1923年6月なかばのある日に、保守党の政治家の妻であるダロウェイ夫人が花を買いに行き、パーティを開く。このたった1日の出来事を描いたヴァージニア・ウルフの『ダロウェイ夫人』は、モダニズムを代表する小説の1つとして読み継がれ、盛んに研究されてきました。本授業ではこの豊饒なテクストを丹念に読み解くことで、その類まれなる文体や構成の妙から、その文化的、政治的、哲学的諸相に至るまでを検討します。

発表担当時には、事前に指示された通りに個人、ないしグループで準備を進め、授業前にハンドアウトを提出してもらいます。
