【Course Objectives】

As outlined in the curriculum map, this seminar aims at consolidating the knowledge and methods of the relevant academic discipline in order to enable students to practice various research activities, including discussion, presentation, and essay composition. Specifically, it focuses on a canonical interwar novel and encourages students to construct an original argument. It is hoped that the seminar further refines students' analytical skills.

【Course Contents】

As an ironical 'chronicle' of the life of the eponymous protagonist of the story, Orlando (1928) recounts the strange fate of a beautiful and noble Elizabethan youth. It is at once a historical novel, a parody of biography, and a playful investigation into the issues of gender—a 'twin' of A Room of One's Own (1929). This seminar will focus on this at once serious and playful work. Students will be required to closely examine the text and to write a term paper.
