Through a close reading of literary texts, students in this course will improve their English skills to read literary texts accurately as well as to analyze it.
We will attentively read Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous short stories in this course.
Although the author may be best known as a writer of some novels, such as The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of the Seven Gables (1851), his literary career started with his short stories. Through a close reading of his works, students will improve their ability to read a literary work as well as to read it critically.

文学作品の精読を通し、英語を正しく読む力を養うとともに、文学作品を批評する力を養う。

19世紀アメリカ文学を代表する作家Nathaniel Hawthorne(1804-64)の代表的短編小説を精読する。Hawthorneという作家は、The Scarlet Letter(1850)やThe House of the Seven Gables(1851)などの長編作品の書き手として知られているが、彼の文学的キャリアの始まりは短編作品にある。本講では、Hawthorneの短編作品の精読を通じて、文学を読む力を養うとともに、文学を批評的に読む力も養っていく。
