Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English skills to read it accurately and criticize it with a good understanding of the work's historical and social background.
We will attentively read Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno" (1855) in this course.
Although this work about intrigue on a slave ship is classified as a novella, it cannot be read without understanding the historical and social background. In this course, through a close reading of the work, students will improve their ability to read the literary text and criticize it with the historical and social contexts in mind.

文学作品の精読を通し、英語を正しく読む力を養うとともに、歴史的・社会的背景を踏まえて文学作品を批評する力を養う。
Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English skills to read it accurately and criticize it with a good understanding of the work's historical and social background.
19世紀アメリカ文学を代表する作家Herman Melville（1819-91）による中編小説 "Benito Cereno"（1855）を精読する。奴隷船上の陰謀を描いた本作は、中編小説に位置付けられる比較的短い作品ではあるが、歴史的・社会的背景抜きには読解し得ないものである。本講では、この作品の精読を通じて、文学を読む力を養うとともに、歴史的・社会的背景を念頭に置きながら文学を批評的に読む力も養っていく。
