【Course Objectives】

Through a close reading of a literary text, students in this course will improve their English skills to read it accurately and criticize it with a good understanding of the work's historical and social background.

【Course Contents】

We will attentively read Herman Melville's "Benito Cereno" (1855) in this course.
Although this work about intrigue on a slave ship is classified as a novella, it cannot be read without understanding the historical and social background. In this course, through a close reading of the work, students will improve their ability to read the literary text and criticize it with the historical and social contexts in mind.
