In following with the spring semester material, this course will cover a range of topics in the wide field of English studies through studying modern English’s cultural and linguistic characteristics and their development over the course of history. Namely, students will consider the current state of the English language as the lingua franca of the world and how it became such in addition to studying historical and grammatical changes to the English language.
Students will learn specifically about modern English’s status in becoming the global language and the historical developments that got it there. In addition, students will also learn about the development of English’s grammar and syntax structure.

本講義は文学講義１（春学期）に続き、英語学概説という広いテーマのもと、現代英語の多文化的、言語的特質がどのような歴史的な経緯で成立したのかについて学習する。すなわち、英語の歴史的変遷を通してその文法について理解するだけでなく、国際共通語となった現代英語の実態とその背景を考察する。それと同時に、英語や英語の特質やその背後にある歴史等に関するリサーチをする練習をする。

国際共通語としての地位を築きつつある現代英語の特徴について英語の歴史を通して具体的に理解します。また、英語の文法・語法の成立過程についての理解を深める。毎回の授業のおよそ半分はその時々のテーマに沿った講義、残りの半分はそのテーマと関連した課題を各自こなすことで英語史・英語学分野におけるリサーチの仕方を身に着けながら能動的に学びを深めます。
Students will learn specifically about modern English’s status in becoming the global language and the historical developments that got it there. In addition, students will also learn about the development of English’s grammar and syntax structure.
