【Course Objectives】

Focusing on Jewish Germans who lived in the late 19th century and early 20th century, this lecture aims to understand their ideas generated in the experiences of assimilation, symbiosis, and diaspora.

【Course Contents】

The first half of this lecture will give an overview of the history of assimilation and symbiosis from the 19th century to World War I. In the second half of this lecture we will focus on biographies and thoughts of representative intellectuals (such as S. Kracauer, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch)leaving Germany as exiles.
