Students will be able to read literatures alone by checking dictionary carefully. In addition to increasing vocabulary, students will also use grammar knowledge they learnt in year 1 to understand more advanced and complex expressions. Students will use downloadable audio materials to improve their pronunciation and listening skills.
Although classics from the 17th to 20th century (and middle age to the 16th century in appendix) will be used as texts, each professor will take students into accounts during the class and choose relatively easy to understand texts. Students should not fixate only on meaning of vocabulary but also be aware of structure and progress of sentences. This will be the opportunity for students to experience efforts that went into literatures’ expressions in their original language.

丁寧に辞書をひきながら、ひとりで文学作品を読み解く力を身につける。語彙を増やすだけでなく、一年次で学んだ文法知識を基礎として、より高度で複雑な文章表現を理解するコツをつかむ。ダウンロード可能な音声教材を使用し、発音とリスニング能力も強化する。

テキストには、17世紀から20世紀まで（さらに付録として中世・16世紀の）名文が並ぶが、授業では、学生の関心に配慮しつつ、各担当教員が選んだ文章を比較的わかりやすいものから読む。単語の意味だけにとらわれず、文の構造と展開をつかむことを意識してほしい。文学作品らしい表現上の工夫を、原文で実感する機会にしたい。

第一回目の授業で全体の流れの説明を行うので、きちんと把握した上で授業に臨むこと。授業にあたっては作品の文章をノートに書き写し、単語の意味を調べるだけでなく、訳文を各自、作成した上で授業に臨むこと。
また、各テクストの時代背景等を知るために、適宜文学史の教科書などを参照すること。
