【Course Objectives】

Students will learn about 19th century society after the French Revolution through reading romance novels. We will try to understand the historical background of the love stories, which are quite different from those of modern Japanese coming-of-age novels. It deals mainly with Balzac's novel, which takes place in the social circles of Faubourg Saint Germain, a former aristocratic stronghold.

【Course Contents】

The course will focus on Balzac's novels, especially "La Duchesse de Langeais" for close reading. Students will learn how to read the novel in a practical way, improve their narrative literacy, and deepen their understanding of nineteenth-century French society as it emerged from the turmoil following the French Revolution. The topics we plan to cover include social circles, rational marriage, adultery, gender, Orientalism, dandyism, democracy, and many others, but first and foremost we want to emphasize the enjoyment of romance novels. After a few introductory lectures, each student will be asked to choose a theme and present it to the class. If possible, we would like to provide students with opportunities to see operas, ballets, and other performing arts related to nineteenth century France.
