【Course Objectives】

This course examines operas, ballets, and other stage productions created in 19th century France. Through an analysis of the performing arts, which today are considered a noble art but at the time were a subculture of the bourgeoisie, we will explore the realities of modern French society after the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.

【Course Contents】

The class will cover issues of theaters such as opera houses as performance venues, and the rise, fall, and popularity of genres such as grand opera and operetta, as well as romantic and classical ballet. The program will also focus on several major works, including "Robert le Diable," "Carmen," and "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (operas) and "La Sylphide," "Giselle," and "Coppelia" (ballets), exploring their major themes, historical and social significance, the aesthetic of each work, and their relationship to the literature of their contemporaries. In each class, time will be set aside to watch DVDs of stage productions, but at the same time, the class will cultivate an attitude of critically examining the productions with an awareness of the historical nature of 19th century France, so that the class does not end with mere appreciation of the works. As for how the class will proceed, after a few introductory lectures, each student will be asked to set his/her own theme and give a presentation. In addition, we would like to provide students with opportunities to actually watch operas, ballets, and other productions that will be covered in class, if possible.
