【Course Objectives】

We will read the French bandes dessinees. At the same time, we will discuss the differences from Japanese manga culture.

【Course Contents】

Bande dessinee is a cartoon peculiar to the French-speaking world, but its history is surprisingly old, dating back to the first half of the nineteenth century. In this class, instead of the latest bandes dessinees read by young French people today, we will be reading excerpts of works from Topffer, who is considered the originator of modern panel-splitting cartoons, to Herge, who is famous for his "The Adventures of Tintin" series in the first half of the 20th century. The class itself will focus on translation and reading, but students will be asked to prepare a final report, comparing the bande dessinee to classic and contemporary Japanese manga.
