【Course Objectives】

Students will read Montaigne’s Essais volume 3 chapter 9 and reflect on “voyage”.

【Course Contents】

Montaigne is one of the most significant authors of 16th century French renaissance. He conducted deep ruminations such as “What is human?” through vast casual anecdotes. In this class, students will read Essais in detail, while learning about the wartime turbulent era. Montaigne has travelled extensively in Europe and has left travel journals. Students will follow his footsteps and understand his views on foreign countries and cultures. Students will read specified parts before class and should be able to provide their resumes and opinions.
