【Course Objectives】

Students will think about modern European society, particularly France and 18th century society, from perspective of outsiders.

【Course Contents】

Regardless of era, there will always be outsiders and society will give them specific roles (as in Japanese society in modern time). Students will study outsiders in modern French society and think about this issue by focusing on castrated population such as eunuch and castrato. Modern-time literature scholars, philosophers, jurists, and painters have frequently used eunuch and castrato as subjects. Students will look at this issue from modern perspectives of psychoanalysis, LGBTQ, and medicine. In addition to that, students will also approach it from (18th century) orientalism, birth of star (several of castrato were global stars), history of stage arts (opera), religion, and politics. Refer to the following for textbooks used.
