Through investigating the world of “denshō” (myths, legends, and other stories), students will grapple with the multi-faceted nature of Japanese culture, while acquiring basic skills at assembling sources, conducting research, and giving presentations.
Readings in “denshō”: Animals
In this seminar students will consider a variety of premodern “denshō” (myths, legends, folk tales, and other stories). The instructor will assign an overall theme, and students will choose a topic or smaller theme within that framework to focus on, collecting and reading relevant materials across genres and time periods. This semester students will give presentations on “denshō” about animals.

〈伝承〉世界の探求を通して、日本文化の多様性について考えるとともに、基本的な資料の集め方、調べ方、発表の仕方を修得する。

テーマ「〈伝承〉をよむ―動物編」
本演習では、前近代の神話、伝説、昔話などにみえる様々な〈伝承〉について考察する。あらかじめ全体のテーマを設定し、受講生はその枠組みの中で各自小テーマを決め、ジャンルや時代を横断しながら、資料の収集、読解を行う。今学期は、「動物」に関する〈伝承〉について発表してもらう。
Readings in “denshō”: Animals
