【Course Objectives】

To understand the characteristics of classical waka poetry and acquire methods of waka poetry research through research and presentation on the waka poetry of "Hyakunin'issyu".

【Course Contents】

"Hyakunin'issyu" is the most well-known waka poem, but there are many problems to consider, such as conflicting interpretations. Even now, new theories on its formation and interpretation are being presented one after another. In this exercise, an overview of the work and the methods of investigation and presentation will be given first, followed by a presentation and discussion by the instructor. Each student will be assigned one poem, which will be read closely, making use of ancient and contemporary commentaries. Many of the students will have been exposed to these works before entering university, but through the presentations and discussions they will be able to make new discoveries.
In the autumn semester, the course will focus on No. 51 to 100.
