【Course Objectives】

Students will carefully read Kankatsu Heike Monogatari, an ukiyozoshi work published in 1710. The goal is to grasp the characteristics of early modern literature, learn methods of research, and deepen understanding of the culture and customs of the era.

【Course Contents】

Students will carefully read Kankatsu Heike Monogatari in group reading format. The book, published in 1710 by an unknown author, is a romantic ukiyozoshi work. Its amorous main character is presented as the son of Yonosuke from The Life of an Amorous Man by Saikaku. In each session, the class will determine a presentation leader and engage in presentations and discussions. The presenter will transcribe and explain the text, and investigate relationships with other works such as ukiyozoshi by Saikaku, the use of classics such as Heike Monogatari, and cultural customs of the times.
