【Course Objectives】

Students will learn about the compilation of dictionaries in the early modern period and the compilers' attitudes toward dictionaries. The course will also deepen our understanding of the role played by the early modern period in the history of dictionaries, which has led to modern and contemporary Japanese-language dictionaries.

【Course Contents】

This class will learn about the structure and characteristics of "Gagonshuran" (compiled by Masamo Ishikawa), a dictionary of ancient words compiled in the early modern period, and actually read the contents of the dictionary. First, an overview of the early modern dictionary and "Gagen Shuran" will be given, and then students will be assigned to read the contents carefully, organize the points to be discussed, and make a presentation. Depending on the level of the students, they will read the dictionaries from a variety of sources, including printed characters and collapsed letters. The points to be presented will vary and will be selected based on several points like corpus comparison, comparison with modern dictionaries, and so on.
