【Course Objectives】

Through reading Buddhist didactic tales, students will acquire a deeper understanding of the Buddhist world view and obtain basic knowledge necessary to reading classical Japanese literature.

【Course Contents】

Literature about the Six Realms of Transmigration
Japanese premodern notions of life, death, and other worlds were strongly influenced by Buddhist thought. Among these notions, people were particularly interested in the concept of hell, a topic that was repeatedly treated in a variety of texts and images. This course explores conceptions of hell and other existences in the world of the Six Realms of transmigration, reading and analyzing a cross-section of classical and medieval Buddhist texts, didactic tales, foundation legends, and hell paintings.
