【Course Objectives】

From the Gunki Monogatari genre, famous scenes having to do with the appearance of women will be focused on, and through these readings the characteristics monogatari produced in Japan’s Middle Ages will be investigated. Along with this, other viewpoints and methods viable in reading Middle Age prose literature will be presented and developed.

【Course Contents】

In the Gunki Monogatari genre, the lives of people living in this time of continued warfare are chronicled. In this class, the depiction of women in Middle Age narratives as well as their reception will be focused upon, and deep readings of several famous passages will be considered in turn. When necessary, comparisons with historical material, and variants texts will be undertaken, and starting with the Tale of the Heike, connections with other narratives and tales will be considered in interpreting why Gunki Monogatari continued to be read in a new fashion.
