From the Gunki Monogatari genre, famous scenes having to do with the appearance of women will be focused on, and through these readings the characteristics monogatari produced in Japan’s Middle Ages will be investigated. Along with this, other viewpoints and methods viable in reading Middle Age prose literature will be presented and developed.
In the Gunki Monogatari genre, the lives of people living in this time of continued warfare are chronicled. In this class, the depiction of women in Middle Age narratives as well as their reception will be focused upon, and deep readings of several famous passages will be considered in turn. When necessary, comparisons with historical material, and variants texts will be undertaken, and starting with the Tale of the Heike, connections with other narratives and tales will be considered in interpreting why Gunki Monogatari continued to be read in a new fashion.

軍記物語のなかから，女性の姿を扱う著名な場面を取りあげて精読し，日本中世に生み出された軍記物語の特質について理解する．あわせて，中世の散文文学を読み解くためのさまざまな視座や方法についての理解を深める．

軍記物語には，いくさが続く時代に生きた人間たちの姿が描き出されている．この授業では，中世の軍記物語に描かれる女性たちの姿と，その受け止められかたに着目し，いくつかの著名な場面を選んで順次精読していく．随時，歴史史料との対照，異本の比較などをおこない，他の物語・説話などとの関係も視野に入れながら，『平家物語』をはじめとする軍記物語が長く読み継がれてきたことの意味を問いなおす．
