The course will clarify the humorousness and vulgarity inherent in haikai, the relationship between nature and humans, and the demand for artistic precedents, in order to grasp the essence and characteristics of haikai. In addition, students will deepen their understanding of modern Japanese culture by understanding transitions in early haikai in terms of its complete history.
Haikai saw an explosion of popularity in the early modern period, and had a great influence on Japanese culture at the time and later as well. Haikai is a literary art that liberally incorporates elements of the commonplace in the form of a poetic series that alternates between 5-7-5 (kaminoku) and 7-7 (shimonoku). This class will select representative works from early modern haikai, explain key points in the interpretation of haikai, and decode the numerous meanings embedded in the strings of words.

俳諧のもつ滑稽さや卑俗さ、自然と人間のかかわり、先行文芸の需要のありさまなどを明らかにし、俳諧の本質や特徴について把握します。また、初期俳諧の変遷を通史的にとらえることで、近世の日本文化についての理解を深めます。

近世に入り爆発的に流行した俳諧は、当時の、そしてその後の日本文化に大きな影響をあたえました。俳諧は、五・七・五（上句）と七・七（下句）を交互に付けてゆく連歌の形式のなかに、〈俗〉の要素を多分に取り込んだ文芸です。授業では、近世初期の俳諧のなかから代表的な作品を選び、俳諧を解釈するうえでの重要なポイントについて説明したのち、ことばの連なりのなかに織り込まれている数々の意味を読み解きます。
