【Course Objectives】

By reading Heian-period kanbun, students will deepen their understanding of Japanese culture, while developing basic skills necessary to reading kanbun.

【Course Contents】

Ōe no Masafusa and Heian-period Kanbun studies
In this lecture, we will read the kanbun writings compiled by the great Heian-period scholar Ōe no Masafusa, in order to consider the lives, worship practices, and thought of Heian aristocrats and Buddhist monks. We will also examine related legends and source materials to better understand Japanese culture of the time from various perspectives.
