【Course Objectives】

Students will understand the historical flow of Heian period literature up to the creation of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the peak of narrative literature.

【Course Contents】

Amid an emphasis on classical Chinese studies in the early Heian period, Japanese culture gradually came under a renewed recognition. Together with the development of kana, the dormant art of waka was reconstructed. This marked the birth of the Kokin Wakashu anthology of waka. Subsequently, through poetic tales centered on waka poems concerning existing persons, as well as individual anthologies, creative fiction, diaries, and essay literature, Genji Monogatari came into being in the middle part of the Heian period.
The course will outline the flow of the history of Heian period literature up to Genji Monogatari.
