【Course Objectives】

Through a close reading of various waka-related tales, the students will gain an understanding of what waka poetry meant to the people of the time.

【Course Contents】

This section takes up a variety of thematic stories and explains their relationship to waka poetry, such as the Katoku Setsuwa, which describe how people are blessed or spared from difficulties because they compose good poems; folklore and legends written in waka poems; stories about poems composed by special beings such as the dead or gods and Buddha; and stories about people's obsession with composing good poems.
