【Course Objectives】

Focusing on kanazoshi, ukiyozoshi and earlier yomihon, the class will follow changes in early modern novels throughout history. While learning about the characteristics of each, students will acquire fundamental methods for reading and interpreting early modern literature. By reading and interpreting works from various perspectives and learning about the background behind their formation, students will deepen their understanding of the society and culture of the Edo period.

【Course Contents】

Students will read representative works from early modern novels. Students will read and analyze each work from various angles, with a view to the relationships with haikai, publishing media, and prior literary art.
