Focusing on kanazoshi, ukiyozoshi and earlier yomihon, the class will follow changes in early modern novels throughout history. While learning about the characteristics of each, students will acquire fundamental methods for reading and interpreting early modern literature. By reading and interpreting works from various perspectives and learning about the background behind their formation, students will deepen their understanding of the society and culture of the Edo period.
Students will read representative works from early modern novels. Students will read and analyze each work from various angles, with a view to the relationships with haikai, publishing media, and prior literary art.

仮名草子・浮世草子・前期読本を中心に、近世前期小説の変遷を通史的に追い、それぞれの特徴を理解しながら、近世文学を読み解くための基礎的方法を身につける。各作品をさまざまな視点から読み解き、その成立の背景を知ることによって、江戸時代の社会や文化に対する理解を深める。

近世前期小説の代表的作品を読む。俳諧や出版メディア、先行文芸とのかかわりをも視野にいれ、各作品を多角的に読解、分析する。
