Transformations of Japanese Deities (kami): A Literary History of Japanese Deities and Buddhist Divinities
Japanese worship of kami developed in close relationship with Buddhism, eventually establishing conceptions of Honji suijaku, by which Japanese deities were seen as temporary forms of buddhas or bodhisattvas that appeared in order to save living beings. Numerous miracle stories were written with reference to this complicated relationship between kami and Buddhist entities. This lecture course will examine origin stories (engi), documents, and paintings concerning two kami, the Great Bodhisattva Hachiman and Matarajin, analyzing their content and considering the transformation of conceptions about kami during the classical and medieval periods.
