【Course Objectives】

This course aims to understand how the concept of homeland has been established and developed in modern and contemporary Japanese literature.

【Course Contents】

In this class, we will consider how "home" has been problematized in modern and contemporary Japanese literature.
Specifically, it will be developed in accordance with the following questions.
1.How was the concept of "hometown" created in the literature of the Meiji period? I will introduce Miyazaki Koshoshi's "Homecoming" as a specific work and explain it.
2.How was the concept of hometown reorganized under the wartime regime after the 1930s? In thinking about this, words such as "fudo" and "kyodo" become key terms. The question of hometown also arises in the Japanese literature of the so-called "gaichi", such as Manchuria, Taiwan, and Korea.
3.What can we see when we look at regions such as Aomori and Tsugaru? We will focus on works by Aomori natives such as Osamu Dazai, Zenzo Kasai, Norio Nagayama, and Shuji Terayama.
4.How is the so-called post-disaster literature redrawing the hometown? We will consider the novels of Yusuke Kimura and Seiko Ito.
