【Course Objectives】

Understand how to apply the analytical perspective of Japanese linguistics to contemporary material, as well as its possibilities and limitations.

【Course Contents】

We will take up the Precure series, which celebrated its 20th anniversary, as contemporary material, and apply the analytical methods and research perspectives of Japanese linguistics from various angles to understand its usefulness and limitations, as well as to discover the unconventional appeal of the material object. Specifically, we will select several topics from the Precure series and discuss them in conjunction with the analytical perspectives of Japanese linguistics, such as phonology, characters, notation, grammar, and expressions of treatment. The main purpose of this lecture is to establish basic knowledge of Japanese linguistics, and the Precure series will be treated only as material in this extremely rigorous course. This is not a class for those who love Precure, but rather a class on Japanese linguistics, so those who do not intend to learn about it are not welcome.
Of course, even if you are not interested in Precure, you can learn how to apply your knowledge of Japanese language studies, as long as you do not have an aversion to Precure. You do not need to be familiar with the Pretty Cure series, but you will be expected to collect some form of data based on the viewpoints presented and summarize it in a report, so please refer to the illustrated books, official websites, TV broadcasts, etc. as necessary.

※Please refer to Japanese Page for details including evaluations, textbooks and others.
