【Course Objectives】

Read written works by social psychologist Erich Fromm (1900-1980) and understand key concepts such as freedom, conformity, love, evil, being productive, and the ideas to have or to be. Become able to support or criticize Fromm’s concepts and contemplate one's own self and modern society.

【Course Contents】

This class is an introduction to social psychology and philosophy. Through written works by Fromm, who is known for books such as Escape from Freedom and The Art of Loving, students will not merely increase their knowledge, but also think for themselves and produce work based on their opinions. Every time classes will be split into a first half and a second half. In the first half, the lecturer will present comment on emails written by students and provide supplementary explanation. In the second half, the lecturer will introduce Fromm’s thinking and concepts (as simply as possible) in accordance with the lesson plan below (this plan may change based on student feedback).
