【Course Objectives】

a) Students will understand major economic events in Japanese history and their influence on contemporary Japan.
b) Students will be able to identify distinctive characteristics throughout Japanese economic history and common features shared with other economies.
c) Students will be able to critically analyze a topic of their choice in assignments.
d) In class discussions, students will present their thoughts and exchange ideas to develop arguments.

【Course Contents】

To understand how Japan transformed itself from a developing to a developed country, it is critical to examine the economic activities of the government, businesses, and people in the past. We also discuss political and social change because Japan's history has important implications for Japan in the 21st century. “Japanese Economic History 1” covers the period between the 17th century up to, but not including the First World War. “Japanese Economic History 2” covers the period between 1914 and the 1960s. This course consists of lectures and class discussions.
