【Course Objectives】

(1) To acquire the ability to form questions and think about economic, social and political issues from an economics, social science, and data science perspective.
(2) To acquire the ability to write convincing reports and papers and to give easy-to-understand presentations about what was thought about and analyzed in (1).

【Course Contents】

The foundation of economics and other social sciences is to learn the methodology for observing and considering people, the economy, and society rather than accumulating new knowledge. Therefore, first students will learn what it means to observe and consider people, society, and the economy using the methodology of economics and other social sciences. Specifically, the lecturer will consult with the students to determine what subject matter to use to study social science methodologies, but in principle the subject matter will be social problems and social welfare.
After that, students will learn not only the methodologies for observing and considering people, society, and the economy, but also how to conduct analysis using statistical data. Specifically, it is presumed that participating students have taken separate classes in statistics and econometrics from the college, so in this course they will practice organizing data and conducting statistical and quantitative analysis using Excel and the R programming language.
In writing their reports, it is important for students to foster the ability to (1) formulate economic and social science questions and hypotheses about social problems and social security, (2) analyze and verity those questions and hypotheses using statistical data, and (3) write a convincing report or paper on those questions, hypotheses, and analytical results and to give an easy-to-understand presentation on them.
