【Course Objectives】

The object of this course is for students to use economic theory and statistical methods to logically and objectively analyze the environmental problem and other social problems and be able to propose solutions for them. An additional objective is for students to be able to accept different ways of thinking and to nurture the ability to skillfully communicate their assertions and ideas to other people.

【Course Contents】

Aiming for economic growth while ignoring the environment is a problem, but thinking about just protecting the environment and completely ignoring economic growth is also a problem. In this seminar students will verify specific environmental problems and learn the theory of environmental economics to consider how to both preserve the environment and have a strong economy. In addition, in response to requests from students, analytical methods for social problems using statistical techniques will also be covered.
During the seminar, students will read the text, present newspaper articles, and write papers either as a group or individually. Further, to improve their presentation ability, students will practice presentations and debates and hold paper reporting sessions (inter-seminars) with other universities. The addressed themes will focus on environmental issues, but for the newspaper article presentations and debates students can address a wide variety of problems that interest them in addition to environmental problems.
