【Course Contents】

Social security system is a system for the government to secure each individuals daily life. By this reason, to study social security means to think deeply from individuals as smallest unit of the society to national economy as lagest unit of the nation. So studying social security is applied science of economics and policy studies.
Many debates will be held during this seminar. There are policy theory and political theory disputes regarding the social security and employment problems, and debates are an effective means for understanding those problems and points of dispute. In addition, the group study can improve communication ability.
Topics taken up in this seminair are medical security (health insurance), income security (pension, employment insurance, welfare, etc.), long-term care security (long-term care insurance, family assistance) and employment system. The aging of the population composition, decline in the birth rate, changes in economic society, and global disputes are putting the Japanese social security system under pressure to reform. Employment practices (Japanese labor-management relations), which are closely related to the social security system, have become an issue with many disputes about how to reform the employment system. When considering these problems, much can be learned by comparing European countries, which are mature welfare states, with Japan, which is one of the countries with the greatest aging of the population. In particular, the comparison will be focused on Demark and Sweden, on which the instructor is a specialist. In addition, East Asian countries, such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan, are building social security systems and these can be compared with Japan. Looking at social security from a global perspective allows us to see sustainable and effective social security systems.
Spring and summer training camps will be held. Students can participate in the spring training camp from the end of their first year. Students are required to write a graduation thesis.
