【Course Objectives】

A degree from the College of Science is a result of much hard work and study, and is meant to show that a student “understands the fundamental principles, laws, and theory in [their] chosen field, and can apply them as necessary.” In order to make such a statement true, this course will cover the fundamentals of polymer chemistry, specifically focusing on the structures and properties of polymer compounds as well as organic chemistry in polymer synthesis.

【Course Contents】

Polymers are widely used as indispensable materials in our daily life, such as synthetic fibers, packaging materials, heat-resistant materials, and so on. In this course, the structure and properties of polymers will be discussed in comparison with low-molecular-weight compounds and then students learn about the chemical reactions that convert monomers into polymers (polymerization reactions) and the chemical reactions of polymers from the viewpoint of organic chemistry. In addition, examples of functional polymers used in electronics, photonics, biomedicine, and other fields and recent academic research topics will be introduced.
