【Course Objectives】

This course will study the meaning and role of arts in society, through theories and actual case studies from Japan and overseas. Also, students will select a research theme related to the arts/contemporary cultures/lifestyles etc. and write a research paper, under the guidance of an advisor.

【Course Contents】

Students spend two semesters researching their topics. This course consists of:

- field research and summer camp (e.g. Hokkaido, Setouchi, Tottori, Taiwan, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, London etc.)
- reading bibliographical materials
- selecting appropriate research methodology
- reading texts and carrying out data collection
- analysing texts and data
- writing a research thesis
- presenting and discussing the research at seminars
