【Course Objectives】

By the end of the course you should:

1. Be able to contextualize your own ideas regarding the relationship between arts/culture and social structures/institutions in a theoretical sense.
2. Explain your own thoughts through discussions, art projects, comment forms, and reports.
3. Develop basic perspectives in understanding the relationship between arts and society in everyday life.

【Course Contents】

This course provides an opportunity to study how arts (including music, films, popular culture etc.) are produced within social structures and institutions; and to analyse the social roles of these arts nowadays. This course will contain the following topics:
- Arts and culture in the wake of social modernization since the 19th century
- Popular Culture and Cultural Industries since the 20th century
- Arts/Creativity/lifestyle in Post-Fordism
- Soft-power, Creative Industries, and Creative Cities
- DIY Culture (Street Art, Squatting etc.)
This course enables students to expand their insights towards a broader engagement with arts/creativity and society, and the challenges arts/creativity face today.
