【Course Objectives】

By learning media history, students will understand current position of modern media culture and improve their ability to think about relationship between media and society in the future.

【Course Contents】

The theme of this advanced seminar is Media History. Media Cultural History is 2022 seminar subject. TV has become the largest entertainment media in post-war Japan, wielding great influence on people’s social consciousness and formation of public opinion. In addition, TV, comic book, music, and advertisement became intertwined after the war, allowing the overall popular culture to blossom. On the other hand, internet and social media have spread rapidly in recent years, changing media culture drastically.
In this seminar, students will read the following textbooks in spring semester to learn the basics of media sociology and discuss its future direction.
In the second half of spring semester, students will be divided into groups of about six. Each group will select a subject for literature reading and data collection. Then students will present their findings at summer boarding seminar and autumn-semester seminar. Students will make discussion with other participants.
In advanced seminar, students will deepen their understanding about one subject through communal tasks. Students should understand that slacking off will not only harm themselves, but also prevent others from studying.
