Observing and discussing musical phenomea in various societies in order to cultivate the basic skills of sociological research.
The course will provide basic concepts of sociology of music. Students will be expected to tackle a series of subjects such as theme setting, problem identification, establishing a hypothesis, reference collection, verification, and report writing. Furthermore, they will be urged to report the results of effort mutually in order to brush up the details. Finally, we will compile the report collection at the end of the school year. It is strongly expected that these reports will act as a core of the graduation thesis of the following academic year.

様々な文化・社会における音楽現象に注目し，その意味や機能について考察することを通じて，社会学的な視点から対象を論じるための基礎的な力を養う。また次年度の卒論執筆に向けアカデミックライティングの基本を身につける。

この授業は「音楽社会学」のゼミである。受講生は自らの興味・関心に沿って独自テーマを定め，問題提起，仮説設定，資料収集，先行文献読解，検証，そして報告書執筆に至る一連の課題に取り組む。また作業の進捗に応じて互いに成果を報告し合い，意見を交わすことで内容のブラッシュアップを図る。
授業では，前半の数回を使って既存の学術論文を幾つか読み解き，主要な理論の活用方法を学ぶ。また学術論文を書くことの意味を理解する。以降は毎回数名の担当者を立て，各自が設定したテーマ，収集した文献，報告書の構成案，調査の結果などについて順次発表を行う。年度末には１年間の成果をまとめた報告書（12,000字）を提出する。この年度末報告書は次年度の卒業論文へと発展的に広がっていく核となることが強く期待される。
