【Course Objectives】

Globalization and digitalization (rapid popularization of the internet and social media) are the trends in this era. In this seminar, students will analyze the impacts of transnational media and popular culture on society. Based on reviews of prior researches, students will acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge about the relationship between media, society, and culture. In addition, students will improve their research ability required to write their graduation theses through the subject of media, society, and culture, notably in the digital media environment of the modern era where various media cross-reference each other. Students will do this by researching in small groups, discovering research questions, designing survey planning, conducting them, making presentation, discussing, and writing research theses.

【Course Contents】

In the spring semester, students will review prior research based on various approaches, including sociological studies on globalization, media and cultural studies, and journalism studies. Each time, students responsible for the report and discussion will be selected. This class will proceed in a workshop format. In the autumn semester, students will be divided into small research groups based on their interests and questions. Students will experience the entire process of presenting research planning, reviewing prior research, making interim survey reports, presenting research results, and writing theses.
