【Course Objectives】

This course as a standard class to teach social research methods applies students' knowledge of descriptive, inferential and bi-variate statistical techniques in analyses of sociological data sets. Using a standard statistical program, students will learn to select appropriate procedures, interpret statistical output, and communicate quantitative findings, hypothesis testing and statistical inference.

【Course Contents】

Students are required to familiarize themselves with the use of Excel and SPSS to learn these statistical procedures in analyses of sociological data set: frequency table, ratio estimation, cross tabulation, chi-square test, Kramer's V, cross table elaboration, representative value (mean value, median value, mode value), mean value estimation, variance, standard deviation, standardization, correlation coefficient, causality and correlation, and so on. In addition, students are instructed to write a paper to demonstrate their ability to select appropriate procedures, interpret statistical output, and communicate quantitative findings, hypothesis testing and statistical inference.
