【Course Objectives】

This course deals with public opinion as an aspect of culture. How are the norms and values shared by people in relation to various social phenomena and issues, as well as their attitudes and awareness toward their relationships with others and their own condition, related to the ongoing division of society in the world? In this class, we will explore this question using the theory and methods of quantitative public opinion research.

【Course Contents】

First, the theory and methods of Quantitative Social Consciousness Theory will be explained.

Next, I will introduce the theories and empirical findings of previous studies on various social attitudes related to various phenomena of social division, and on subjective wellbeing as a consequence of social division.

Finally, students will conduct a brief analysis of data from recent public opinion polls and academic surveys (SSP survey, JGSS survey, World Values Survey, International Social Survey Program, etc.) related to social division, according to their own interests.

Based on the results, we will discuss where the problems concerning social awareness lie and what institutional and policy improvements are needed, and discuss them among the participants.
