【Course Objectives】

By taking this course, students can understand the Chinese cultural sphere from the diverse cultural perspective, and deepen their understanding of regional culture with an open and flexible way of thinking.

【Course Contents】

This course interprets values and lifestyles of the Chinese cultural sphere in terms of food culture, religious beliefs, material culture, history and cross-cultural communication, and explores development of the Chinese culture at different eras and regions from a diverse cultural perspective. The food culture part covers the knowledge about traditional food and catering customs. The religious belief part involves Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The Chinese character culture part includes the generation and influence of Chinese characters. The material culture part focuses on handicrafts and architecture. The history and cross-cultural communication part talks about the history of cross-cultural communication and its influence to this date. By reading and watching textual and visual materials listed in the “course plan”, students can interpret the cultural connotations reflected by different forms of culture. In order to facilitate the absorption of knowledge and deepen the understanding of knowledge, this course attaches great importance to class discussion. At the mid-term and the final-term, students are required to consolidate and master knowledge points by giving presentations.
