【Course Objectives】

In the present era of expanding globalization, English is no longer just the language of native speakers, but it has become an international common language that is literally spoken by all sorts of people in various nations across the world. Against this historical backdrop we will think about what exactly English is, and learn about its structure and function.

【Course Contents】

In this course we will study the English language system and various aspects of communication that take place in English, specifically in comparison to Japanese. Firstly, we will focus on English communication in the context of people, society and culture. We will analyze how communication takes place in English, and also how the intentions of the speaker are conveyed to the listener. Next, we will focus on the English language system and provide an outline of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar from the perspective of typical English characteristics.
