【Course Objectives】

This is an introductory course of the Translator and Interpreter Training Program designed to develop the essential knowledge and fundamental competencies required for translators and interpreters. The course aims to enable students to understand the diverse roles, working practices, and necessary skills that characterize the profession today. It also explores the relationship between practice and theory. Another aim of this course is to explore the application of translation and interpreting theories toward practice.

【Course Contents】

Through lectures and discussions, students will learn about various aspects of translation and interpreting, focusing on theories of communication, translation approaches and processes, cultural competency, ethics, and challenges faced by translators and interpreters in practice. In addition, professional translators and interpreters will be invited as guest speakers who will share their first-hand experiences to deepen students’ understanding of the importance of translation and interpreting studies in society.

Reading assignments will be required in advance of classes. At the end of each class, students will be required to submit a reaction paper about what they have learned through reading materials, lectures, and class discussions. In addition, students will be expected to submit written assignments and actively participate in class discussions when instructed.
