【Course Objectives】

An introductory course to Communication Studies. At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain the historical development of Communication Studies as a distinct academic discipline as well as major sub-fields of Communication Studies.
2. Understand major theories, perspectives, and research methods in Communication Studies, and apply them to analyzing communication in everyday life.
3. Learn communication from various perspectives and become more responsible communicators.

【Course Contents】

First, students will learn the major types and functions of communication and the history and sub-fields of Communication Studies. Then, they will familiarize themselves with key concepts and basic principles in major sub-fields of Communication Studies primarily by reading chapters from introductory-level textbooks. This is a lecture course, but group activities and discussions will be incorporated into the course. Thus active student participation in class is both expected and required.
