An introductory course to Communication Studies. At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain the historical development of Communication Studies as a distinct academic discipline as well as major sub-fields of Communication Studies.
2. Understand major theories, perspectives, and research methods in Communication Studies, and apply them to analyzing communication in everyday life.
3. Learn communication from various perspectives and become more responsible communicators.
First, students will learn the major types and functions of communication and the history and sub-fields of Communication Studies. Then, they will familiarize themselves with key concepts and basic principles in major sub-fields of Communication Studies primarily by reading chapters from introductory-level textbooks. This is a lecture course, but group activities and discussions will be incorporated into the course. Thus active student participation in class is both expected and required.

コミュニケーション研究の入門コース。具体的な到達目標は以下の通り。
１）コミュニケーション学の歴史、隣接分野との共通点や相違点、主要領域を理解し、説明することができる。
２）コミュニケーション学における基礎的な理論や研究アプローチを理解し、身の回りのコミュニケーションの観察、分析に役立てることができる。
３）様々な側面からコミュニケーションを学ぶことで、より自覚的にコミュニケーションに向き合えるようになる。
An introductory course to Communication Studies. At the end of the course students should be able to:

まずは、コミュニケーションの分類や機能、コミュニケーション学の歴史や主要領域など、コミュニケーション学の概要を紹介する。その後、コミュニケーション学における基礎的な文献を読みながら、各領域のアプローチについての理解を深めていく。講義形式の授業ではあるが、適宜ディスカッションや演習などを取り入れていくので、積極的な授業参加が求められる。
First, students will learn the major types and functions of communication and the history and sub-fields of Communication Studies.
