【Course Objectives】

This course aims to deepen understandings of peacebuilding efforts by the international community and their dilemmas in conflict affected areas.

【Course Contents】

This course examines the issues of peacebuilding efforts by the international communities such as 1) how to lead armed conflicts to peace, 2) how to reconstruct and develop societies destroyed by armed conflicts, and 3) how the international community can cooperate for that purpose.

Part I introduces changes of international security before and after the Cold War, and various actors involved in peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected areas. Part II focuses on the UN PKOs which have begun to play a new role since the end of Cold War and their dilemma. Part III explores new concepts of international security and the dilemma that the international community comes to face. Part IV examines the dilemma of “war on terrorism.”
