【Course Objectives】

Students will learn the characteristics of the Japanese language (phonetics, phonemes, grammar) needed to teach it to people who do not speak it as a native language, and gain the ability to explain those characteristics in their own words. Students will pay close attention to the Japanese they speak on a daily basis and gain the ability to analyze it linguistically.

【Course Contents】

The course focuses not on the way Japanese is taught to Japanese people, but on various idiosyncrasies of Japanese important for teaching it to non-native speakers. Students will learn to define the Japanese language and why it must be taught differently to non-native speakers than it is to Japanese people, and will learn about Japanese phonetics, phonemes, morphology and syntax from relatable examples. Although lecturing is the main mode of teaching in this course, students should have positive attitudes toward participation because they will also learn through exchanges with their classmates.
